Sometimes we miss the small words in the Bible. Words that, at first reading, seem to hold little meaning. In Acts 10:46 is one such word: “For.” It says, “For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” Why is this word important?
In the story, Peter went to the household of Cornelius. They received Christ and, in verse 45, were baptized in the Spirit. Verse 46 tells us how Peter knew they had been baptized; what the signs were that something spiritual had happened: FOR they spoke in tongues and magnified God.
As we contend for more of God and His Spirit; as we invite His Spirit into our lives we can expect there to be evidence of His answer to our prayers. Whether it is speaking in an unknown or spiritual language or whether it is a spontaneous expression of God’s worth, there will be a manifestation of something unusual and out of the ordinary. As Peter recognized that something spiritual happened, so can we.
